Code Changes
1. Special Change to the National Building Code: Structural Design Requirements for Arched Roofs
At the October 2001 meeting of the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC), a Special Change to Part 4 of the National Building Code (NBC) was approved addressing the structural design requirements for arched roofs. The Special Change focuses on a potentially significant design shortcoming in the snow load provisions of the NBC and therefore, the BC Building Code.
The BC Building Code will be amended in the future to reflect these changes.
In the meantime, due to the urgency of this issue, the Building Policy Branch recommends that owners of buildings with arched roof structures should have them checked to determine if these roofs have the capacity to support the snow loads now specified by the National code.

2. Changes to the BC Building Code
In response to the Commission Of Inquiry Into The Quality Of Condominium Construction In British Columbia, amendments to the British Columbia Building Code are being proposed. These proposed amendments reflect our current understanding of the issue and are intended to assist code users to more clearly understand the building envelope requirements of the Building Code, particularly for application in coastal climatic conditions.
